KEYAKI
VILLA

A Fusion of Japanese Tradition and International Elegance

Set within the tranquil Ginto development in Niseko, Keyaki Villa artfully embodies the client’s vision of “Japanese sensibility with an international flair.” Tasked with both the architecture and interior design, the goal was to create a sanctuary deeply rooted in Japanese tradition while appealing to global tastes—a home that seamlessly adapts to Niseko’s breathtaking yet extreme seasonal contrasts.

Drawing on traditional Japanese materials and techniques, the villa balances simplicity with complexity, creating a space that is expansive yet intimate, understated yet striking. Refined natural materials, such as wood and stone, reflect the villa’s connection to the Hokkaido landscape, while warm, elegant furnishings introduce an international style. The art within the home pays homage to the Ainu people, Hokkaido’s indigenous ancestry, fostering a deep cultural connection.

The design ethos embraces Hokkaido’s unique environment. In winter, Keyaki Villa transforms into a warm retreat, with low ceilings, plush furnishings, and crackling fires inviting residents to nestle in comfort. The onsen bath, heated by geothermal energy, provides a serene escape, offering relaxation and rejuvenation amidst the snow-covered landscape.

In summer, the villa opens up to the outdoors, with open-plan spaces and sliding doors that connect seamlessly to covered walkways and gardens. Locally crafted bamboo shades offer privacy while allowing the summer breeze and natural light to flow through the interiors. This duality, cozy in winter, open and airy in summer, reflects a carefully considered hybrid design ethos.

The home’s layout is designed as a sequence of adaptable spaces. Shoji screen doors allow for flexibility, enabling the owner to open or close areas according to their needs. The flowing living, dining, and kitchen areas connect to an entertainment room, perfect for seasonal gatherings. With hidden sliding doors, these spaces can be reconfigured into smaller, more intimate settings, offering versatility for any occasion.

Sustainability is at the heart of Keyaki Villa’s design. Locally sourced materials ensure a connection to the environment, while geothermal energy heats the onsen baths and spa. Thick insulation and triple-glazed windows provide warmth during winter, and overhanging roofs and shaded walkways mitigate summer heat, ensuring year-round comfort.

Keyaki Villa is more than a home, it is a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, designed to celebrate and embrace Hokkaido’s ever-changing seasons.
