ODIN HILLS
M2 PLOT
Redefining Japanese Alpine Living
In Europe, mountain villas have long been defined by iconic forms like the A-frame Austrian chalet, a symbol of alpine living refined over centuries. By contrast, Japan lacks a well-established design vernacular for its burgeoning ski culture. Odin Hills Plot M2 seeks to address this gap, offering a harmonious hybrid that celebrates Japanese tradition while meeting the demands of contemporary mountain living.

The villa’s design responds to its narrow site, bordered by a road on one side and a breathtaking view of Mount Yotei on the other. Inspired by Kyoto’s architectural sensibilities, the home is intentionally closed off on the road-facing side, gradually opening up as it transitions toward the stunning volcanic landscape. This concept extends to the interior layout, where compact, practical spaces near the road give way to expansive, open-plan areas oriented toward the view.
In winter, the villa becomes a warm sanctuary, combining communal spaces centered around cozy fireplaces with tranquil, intimate retreats. A private Japanese onsen bath enhances the experience, offering a serene escape surrounded by nature. During the summer, the design transforms, opening up to a spacious upper-level deck that frames the volcano and a ground-floor deck leading to a carefully curated Japanese garden, blending inside and outside seamlessly.

Materials for the project are locally sourced and distinctly Japanese, reflecting a commitment to simplicity, sustainability, and harmony with the environment. Thick insulation and triple-glazed windows ensure warmth during harsh winters, while overhanging roofs and shaded walkways mitigate heat in summer.
Odin Hills Plot M2 is more than a home, it is an architectural vision of what Japanese alpine living can become. Rooted in tradition yet forward-thinking, it is a sanctuary that adapts to its spectacular surroundings and the rhythms of the seasons.
